THE FLU (INFLUENZA ILLNESS):

INFLUENZA VIRUS is a virus that causes severe RESPIRATORY AND GASTROINTESTINAL ILLNESS often accompanied by fever, sore throat, cough, congestion, lack of appetite and muscle or joint aches. The “FLU” is best prevented by receiving a seasonal INFLUENZA VACCINE which becomes available in the fall. “FLU SEASON” usually starts in late November but can last as late as March or April.  If your child has signs of flu illness it is important to contact your pediatrician for further evaluation and possible treatment. Supportive care including FEVER CONTROL, HYDRATION AND REST is the mainstay of treatment however  some children may also qualify for treatment with a medication called TAMIFLU. If symptoms worsen it is important to monitor for complications of flu such as PNEUMONIA OR DEHYDRATION and speak with your doctor.
